The Magic two days'
31/07/09
Imagine the scene, one of your drivers comes back into your yard at the end of the day and tells you he has rear-ended a Citroen Picasso. Your driver hands you the other party's details and you put them in your pocket intending to sort things out later. You think, this accident was clearly my driver's fault, so why rush to contact my fleet insurer? After all, the claim will come in soon enough from the third party and there's no damage to my truck. I'm busy enough without having to get involved in another insurance claim - I'll report it when I get around to it.
So it sits in your in-tray for a week and in the meantime, offers of help are coming thick and fast for the other driver. First he reports the claim to his insurers. Because he wasn't at fault, his insurer refers his details to a credit hire company who offer him a shiny new Citroen Picasso in place of his 5 year old one at no cost to him and also offer to repair his vehicle through their network. They also enquire whether he may well be injured and offer to refer him through to a solicitor if he needs one.
The other driver politely declines and decides he'll just visit his local garage and find out how much it will cost to repair the damage. The garage were equally helpful once they found out he had been hit in the rear and also offered to put him in touch with a credit hire company. In the end he takes the offer and enjoys driving his new Citroen for the next 19 days. The daily cost of the hire is £67.
The claim ends up costing £1571 for repairs, £1273 in credit hire and the driver is seriously considering putting in an injury claim for the bit of a twinge he had for a couple of days.
Thankfully there is an alternative. TruckQuote, in conjunction with Aviva, are actively working with clients to manage down their claims cost. TruckQuote encourages reporting of claims within two days, ideally by the driver which enables Aviva to work their magic.
Lets run the same scenario again Aviva style.
You take the other parties details and ring through to the Aviva 24 hour helpline to report the accident. Within the hour Aviva have contacted the other driver and agreed the following:
Replicate scenario 1 a few times and you start to see how this can adversely affect a fleet claims experience. The cost of claims on your policy is the most significant factor used to calculate your new insurance premium, so cutting the number and cost of accidents means lower insurance premiums as well as a reduction in uninsured costs.
One last scary thought, the credit hire rate for a Porsche, Aston Martin or Bentley is over £700 per day!!
