How many trucks do you run?

I DON'T RUN TRUCKS

Insurance Q & A

05/08/09

Q

Iíve told my drivers that if they ever get a conviction, they must tell me immediately. Iím worried someone might have a crash, then I find out the driver hasnít told me about a serious conviction, then the claimís thrown out. Should I be doing more to cover my back?

A

Asking staff to immediately disclose any convictions is a start but what you really need to do is also put in place a rigorous system for physically checking their driving licences before they drive a company vehicle and thereafter on a regular basis ñ every 6 months at least. Even thatís not fool proof so what we recommend is that checks are regularly made using the DVLA driver licence database ñ just in case the licence youíre being shown is the one that was conveniently ëlostí just before that drink-drive conviction. If this all sounds like an administrative nightmare, consider using a specialist licence-checking firm.
